Horsemanship Level 2 (Beginning
Level)
Identify the following parts
of the horse: throatlatch, poll, forearm, pastern, hock, croup,
and dock
Explain the horse’s eyesight
and vision
Properly put on a saddle, then
remove it and put it away
Properly put on a bridle, then
remove it gently and correctly
Properly mount, assume correct
position and dismount (size of rider taken into account)
Do suppling exercises with experienced
handler alongside horse

Level 3 (Beginning Level)
Get a halter and retrieve your
own horse from the paddock
Properly shorten and lengthen reins while horse is at rest and
walking
Properly control horse at the walk, this includes turning left,
turning right, moving forward and stopping
Can ride a sitting trot on the rail in both directions properly
and without bouncing
Can shorten and lengthen reigns while at the sitting trot

Level 4 (Beginning Level)
Identify all parts of the body
including the addition of: crest, nostril, chestnut, ergot,
barrel, stifle, gaskin, thigh, fetlock, coronet (bands) and
loins
Discuss the meaning of discipline and reward in horses
Demonstrate control balance and proper position when riding
bareback at a walk and trot
Can back the horse properly
Has enjoyed a trail ride and can demonstrate the skills necessary
to make it a fun and safe ride

Level 5 (Beginning Level)
Can post the trot maintaining
a rhythm with the horse
Can shorten and lengthen reigns at a posting trot
Can explains diagonals at a trot
Demonstrate the right and left diagonals in a straight line
at a trot
Can change diagonals gracefully every 3 strides
Can do a transition from a sitting trot to a posting trot
going both ways of the ring and pick up the correct diagonal
each way
