Our western horsemanship video includes instruction on on riding western at the walk, jog and lope, PLUS general handling, grooming, tying, tacking up, horses eyesight and vision, their body language and why they react like they do, riding bareback, trail riding and safety tips.  Also lunging, bits and biting, and correct equipment fit.  Slow motion segments are used to clarify the lope and leads.

It includes 5 levels of western horsemanship with the following learning objectives:

Western Horsemanship Level 1

Identify the horse's muzzle, forelock, shoulder, withers, back, elbow, knee, hoof, and frog.

Demonstrate and show the proper use of a halter, lead rope, curry comb, dandy brush, and hoof pick.

Lead a horse properly at a walk and jog.

Tie a horse safely with both cross ties and a single tie.


Western Horsemanship Level 2

Identify the following parts of the horse: croup, forearm, cannon bone, fetlock, pastern, and hock

Explain the horse’s eyesight and vision

Properly put on a saddle, then remove it and put it away

Properly put on a bridle, then remove it gently and correctly

Properly mount, assume correct position and dismount (size of rider taken into account)

Do suppling exercises with experienced handler alongside horse

Hold the reins properly

Demonstrate control and balance while the horse is at the walk

 

Western Horsemanship Level 3

Identify the following parts of the horse: throatlatch, poll, nostril, flank, barrel, gaskin, and stifle

Retrieve a horse when he is loose in the paddock

Put a bridle on a horse properly and take it off gently

Demonstrate control and balance while the horse is at the jog

Unsaddle the horse and put the saddle away efficiently

Identify the parts of a saddle

Understand how a saddle is supposed to fit both the horse and rider

Have an understanding of the types of bits, their use and fitting them to the horse properly

 

Western Horsemanship Level 4

Identify the following parts of the horse: crest, loins, hock, thigh, chestnut, coronet band, and ergot(s)

Discuss the importance of reward and punishment with horses

Successfully complete a figure 8 at a walk and jog

Drop and gather the stirrups at a walk and a jog

Ride with no stirrups at a walk and jog

Ride bareback at a walk and jog, maintaining control and balance

Back a horse

Learn the keys to a successful trail ride

Lunge a horse successfully

 

Western Horsemanship Level 5

Understand what a lope is

Understand what leads are and what is the correct lead

Can cue a horse properly for the lope

Sit the lope both on the rail and in the circle maintaining control and balance

Perform a figure 8 at the lope demonstrating a lead change

Drop and gather the stirrups at the lope

Ride the lope without stirrups
